AOMC All American Day 2013
Never have I seen a car show utilize the size of the area this show has to the point of having turn vehicles away but that is what happened today. The All American car show put on by the AOMC and sponsored by Shannons Insurance had such a huge turnout of classic, custom, old and new and covering all American marques and models that by 11am they had no choice but to shut the gates. My estimate would put the number of vehicles to over 1200 with reports of another smaller car show starting out in the car park from those turned away. Even those looking to simply attend in person had to line up due to the popularity of this mega-event. With perfect autumn weather in Melbourne, the order of the day was to find an outside activity and anyone with a strong interest in this vocation could be expected to attend this automotive spectacular among others found in and around Melbourne.
Mustangs lined up for row after row while the bowtie enthusiasts occupied another large part of the manicured lawns of Flemington Racecourse. Other sections catered for Ford, Buick, Chrysler and other marques. A number of clubs set up their displays showcasing the quality of their member’s rides while individuals filled out the rest of the grounds with polished up prides and joy. Covering everything from hot rods through to the latest muscle cars, there was something for everyone while trade stands and children’s activities complimented the fantastic family day out.
This social occasion also makes it a great opportunity to catch up with fellow automotive enthusiasts and shoot the breeze on what’s been going on or recent shows attended. I look forward to the next event on our car biased calendars to seeing what new, old or different in our scene! One thing’s for sure, these shows just keep growing in stature and size!
Keep on crusin,
Cheers,
Greg
The Yenko Camaro
Have you ever wondered why some muscle cars have extra names and what they mean? What about “Yenko”? Well here’s a quick run down!
Pennsylvaniacar dealer, Don Yenko is the Chevy fan’s version of Ford’s Carroll Shelby but by no means takes a back seat to him!
In 1965, Yenko, a racer by name and nature, initially completed the mods and engine transplants to various Chevrolet models himself without the support of Chevrolet, but in 1969, the GM brand could see where there was money to be made and agreed to factory build a batch of Camaros fitted with 427c.i. Corvette engines and supply warrantees with them!
The Corvette engines were toughened up using iron blocks, iron heads and solid lifters seeing the motor give out a healthy 450HP. Cowl induction bonnets were added along with Z28 suspension and Posi rear ends. Chevrolet wouldn’t badge the muscle cars so Yenko took it upon himself to do it and created the SYC (Yenko Super Car) insignia and striping and made available other options such as mags, gauges, headers and other items.
This beautiful Yenko equipped Camaro is owned by Chris who has owned it for over two years after purchasing it from theUnited States. He had it professionally restored by a company inAmericawhich Chris had previously dealt with, giving him reassurance that he would get a quality finish.
The eye catching paint colour is Hugger Orange complimenting the “optional from dealer” white interior. Power comes in the form of a tough 427 c.i. Chev feeding through a 5 speed manual box down to the traditional12 bolt rear end. If 427 cubes isn’t enough to get your juices going, the recently rebuilt donks been helped out by an 850 CFM double pumper, MSD ignition with the spent gases exiting through Jet Hot extractors.
For Chris, there are no plans on selling this one as it is the perfect partner for his other ride, an SS RS Camaro. It must come down to a toss of a coin as to which one he takes out for the day!
