Vic Hot Rod Show 2013

For those of us with a strong interest in the automotive scene, Australia Day traditionally sees many events happen from bbqs with your mates bullshitting about car related topics through to cruises with your local club or mates while bullshitting about car related topics. This year we could add a major event to our Australia Day program as the date fell on the same weekend as the Victorian Hot Rod show held in Melbourne at the historic Exhibition Building. Cars and bikes from far and wide were able to cruise up to the four day event and create a fantastic show outside while taking in the spectacle inside. Throw in some beautiful sunny weather and there was no excuse for not getting your ride out and going for a spin.

Inside saw a variety of new show cars on display from a wildly blown veedub beetle to an immaculately customized EH Holden. The usually flawlessly presented rods could also be found on show from 32 highboys to 40s coupes and sedans among others.

Upstairs kept budding rodders entertained from small scale drag racing and model cars through to a wide variety of trade stands ready to dress you or your ride up or to simply enhance your home or garage with art and memorabilia. Downstairs had its fair share of trade stands covering everything from clothing through to magazines on the very subject.

The closed off areas outside the World Heritage listed building catered for more club displays with Saturday hosting Australian marques while Sunday was reserved for the American breeds.

The picturesque Carlton gardens gave a stunning backdrop to the many rods, classics and custom found out front around the fountain and in the side lanes. A day could easily be lost perusing the show from inside and out but never wasted!

If you are yet to take in this automotive spectacle, why not make it your Australia Day tradition and come on down! Hey, bring your mates and it’ll give you something to bullshit about around the bbq next time…Yeah right! Like we need something to bs about!

Colac custom car and bike show 2013

Well, once again the guys and girls of the Colac custom car and bike show organisation have turned on a fantastic weekend starting with Friday night’s drive-in movie, The Blues Brothers , Saturday’s show n shine seeing around 500 cars and bikes attend and Sunday’s cruise to Inverleigh!

Memorial Square located centrally in Colac lends itself perfectly as a family friendly setting for such a show with participants coming from as far as Melbourne and far west Victoria. The variety of vehicles and bikes on show is astounding from classic vintage, custom, street/strip, late model and just plain wild! There was even a top fuel rail on show with fire up demonstrations drowning out the live band temporarily while drawing a large crowd!

Trade stands filled the outer edge of the square while food and beverages could be found courtesy of the local Lions club tent and other assorted venues. Sit down meals were easily located just outside the show at a number of pubs and eateries.

Sunday saw a more relaxed atmosphere with breakfast at the local RSL and then a leisurely cruise to the quiet country pub located in Inverleigh allowing Geelong/ Melbourne participants the chance of meeting some of the sociable Colac crew while heading in the right direction for home.

Geelong Street Rodders cruise night

I don’t get much of a chance to check out these Monday night events but I did tonight and found it to be a great way to rid yourself of Mondayitis. While the gathering was small, the range of rides was varied as can be seen in the pics. This happens the second Monday of evey month thoughout daylight savings at the Geelong showgrounds, put on by the Geelong Street Rodders. Hey, I even walked away with a new screwdriver set from the raffle! Now I can really fix this bloody computer!!

Surfside Campout 2013

Run over two days, the Surfside Campout put on by the dedicated crew of the South West Street Rodders has a long standing with rodders and classic car enthusiasts alike. Located in the south west region of Victoria along the coastal shores of Southcombe beach in Port Fairy, it brings many people from around the state and neighbouring South Australia together for an annual get together allowing participants to take in the many local attractions found throughout the region on the first day while Sunday is reserved for the show n shine accompanied by live rock and roll music. With overcast conditions threatening to put a dampener on proceedings, it held off allowing entrants and punters to enjoy the visual spectacular that lay before them on the kept grounds of the Port Fairy sports grounds. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of perusing this scenic part of the country, why not check it out and include this great event as part of your itinerary!

Kustom Nationals, 2013

With 40 degree Celsius weather forecast for the first day of the 11^th Kustom Nationals, fans of this event could be excused for deciding to keep their rides tucked away while chilling out in the comfort of an air conditioned room somewhere, preferably with a drink in hand, but anyone who attended Friday nights opening event held along the picturesque foreshore of San Remo will testify that this did not happen!
