Bacchus Marsh show n shine and swap meet 2012

Nothing like a good country swap meet to bring out a wide variety of fantastic rides, throw in some great weather and a rockin’ band and you’ve got yourself a great day out! This is exactly how the Bacchus Marsh show n shine and swap meet played out today with another enormous turnout of cool cars and bikes. Bacchus Marsh is perfectly placed when it comes to convenient locations for such a gathering. With easy access from the major cities such as Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat and a stones throw away from much smaller community, it’s no wonder it has such a big following. As a club run event, the Marsh Rodders do themselves proud every year by keeping it informal yet organised.

With more Harleys than you’d dare to poke a stick at and every conceivable set of wheels from classic vintage Fords, Buicks and Dodges through to the latest Camaros, Mustangs and Pontiacs, a wide variety of locally built iron and many classic American imports on show, the car enthusiasts were well catered for and not to be outdone, the swap meet sites were plentiful with many bargains on offer for those who knew where to look.

The hungry punters were well catered for too with a variety of food stalls on offer while the shady grounds provided cool shelter from the warming sun. A large playground kept the little troops entertained throughout the day giving Mum and Dad time to take in the surrounding exposé.

Cruzin Knights show n shine 2012

Sunday the 7^th of October saw the Cruzin Knights car club host its 2^nd annual show n shine to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Australia. Held at the WerribeeCivicCenter, it was the perfect place for car and bike enthusiasts alike to cruise down in their rides and park up for a great family day out. Those who braved the chilly Victorian spring day weren’t disappointed with plenty of quality vehicles on show from hot rods, classic cruisers and muscle cars through to drag cars and even a rail. Not to be left out, the kids were treated to an abundance of activities from a jumping castle through to a petting zoo and other entertainment.

Much needed funds for the Cancer Council of Australia would have been raised from this car show and will see it return year after year with continuing support from those who embrace this vocation be it showing their own pride and joy or simply attending and enjoying the ample array of automotive art that we all devote our spare time to restoring and maintaining.

Mark this one down in your calendar for next year and we’ll see you there.

Ballarat All GM Day 2012

This must be the year for new car shows as our calendars are over filled with options of inaugural or established shows to attend. The Ballarat Turf club in conjunction with the Ballarat and District Early Holden Car club have put on this event with a difference; combining horses with horse power! With plenty of space available for people’s rides, a large turnout almost filled the grassed area and proceeded to enjoy the facilities and activities available to the punters. The children were well catered for with show rides, face painting, Wii games played on a digital screen the size of a truck (no exaggeration!) and children’s songs sung by the Mik Maks. There was also plenty of food stalls on offer for the hungry crowd while trade stands helped us decide what we should do to our rides next.

The GM brand was well covered from a range of 1920s era Oaklands through to the latest Camaro laid out across the grounds with the majority of vehicles being our own Aussie built classics. The quality of the cars on show was high seeing some freshly built cruisers come out to enjoy the Spring weather while the regulars kept up their standards to add a few more k’s under their belts.

As with all things, the success of a show will guarantee it to return year after year and become one of the established shows on our calendar so if you support the Detroit based product, check this one out for next year and even try your luck on the GGs, you might go home richer than you turned up!

Kevs Car park Family Day

For those who can remember back to a time before Iphones and Facebook, there was a great hangout in Geelong called Kevs Car Park. It was so named because Kev and Jo would be there with their food van cooking up the best hamburgers, doughnuts and other fast foods for the guys and girls who enjoyed spending their weekend hanging laps around town and Eastern beach. Unfortunately, these days are gone and can’t be recreated thanks to a multi-story car park built on top of the hallowed turf.

Having said that, Kev and Jo are still with us and have created a great family day for car enthusiasts alike to enjoy and reminisce about the good ‘ol days while checking out the wide variety of vehicles on show that make up the Geelong and surrounding district’s car scene. Not to be left out, they have given the kids, who may or may not have been conceived during these late night cruises, some great activities to partake in while the St Albans Football Club opened up its kitchen to cook up a storm for the hungry punters.

It was a phenomenal turnout filling the grounds of the football club very quickly helped by some fantastic weather giving everyone an excuse to get their pride and joy out and go for a cruise. It’s also great to see the many young people getting into the scene and who can hopefully take away from shows like this just what it is all about to be part of the motoring community. Maybe they too will one day have a Kevs Carpark of their own in which they can hang out and socialize. You can be guaranteed of one annual Kevs Carpark and that’ll be here same time next year if Kev and Jo have anything to do with it!

Great to see you again, Kev and Jo, and look forward to catching up again next year!

Hamlyn Banks Hot rod show

Inaugural car show these days don’t seem to start off small any more. Since the invention of viral media, word spreads fast and a new show can fill the grounds it’s presented on very quickly. Such was the case on Saturday when the Bacchus Marsh Rodders and Buxton Real Estate got together to put on a car show at Hamlyn Banks primary school. By mid morning the grounds were full giving the locals and other car enthusiasts plenty to look at while the kids could enjoy the various play equipment available. A sausage sizzle saw the hungry mouths fed for lunch and a few stalls presented their wares for all to see.

The organizers might need to acquire more grounds for next year if this turnout was anything to go by. Once again, a great fund raiser supported by the motoring enthusiasts and I’m sure it will be repeated again next year.

Keilor Rotary Club car and vintage bike show 2012

The quiet country outer suburb of Melbourne, Keilor awakened on Sunday to the sights and sounds of the annual car and vintage bike show put on by Ross and his hard working team from the Keilor Rotary Club. With the cool overcast temperatures alerting us to the imminent winter, many knew it maybe one of the last chances to get their pride and joy out for one more cruise and show before putting them away for the extended period.

Combined with a local craft market and the picturesque Keilor Hotel, many car enthusiasts are finding this event to be a mainstay on their calendar seeing them return each year while others are thrilled to discover this modest show for the first time. The surrounding grounds always has variety of makes, models and styles on show from highly modified strip/ street cars and bikes to vintage classics and everything in between.

While the locals always come out to support this event, others travel from further a field as they know they’ll be guaranteed a relaxing day out and a great feed to boot. The judges had their work cut out for them as the quality on show was high but the deserved winners were announced early afternoon seeing a great finish to a relaxing day.

If you are yet to discover this event, mark it on your calendar for next year and we’ll see you there and I’m sure you’ll make it a regular experience as well as part of your car show happenings.

Avalon burnout comp April 21st 2012

Any petrol head looking for action on Saturday would have hit nirvana if they attended the Avalon burnout competition put on by Paul and Jason Drew with assistance from Garden City Wreckers, The Picture Magazine and other various sponsors.

With five grand cash up for grabs, over sixty entrants signed up to have a go at conquering the pad while entertaining the smoke hungry crowd. The howl of blowers, the scream of turbos and the roar of untamed donks filled the cool Autumn air while entrants went about shredding tires, boiling radiators and heating their exhausts up red hot to the point it’d fry the paint off the floor.

With little to no wind available, many were lost in their own smoke to what seemed an eternity leaving us to wonder what they were doing in there. While some were busy chewing on the fencing, others seemed content to bask in the glow of the shift light screaming at them “change up, change up!” as they negotiated their way around the rubber hungry pad.

The girls from Picture magazine provided the half time entertainment by strutting their stuff on stage with an invitation to audience members to participate as well. The competition was tough so it was left up to the raucous mob to decide the winner which they had no objections to.

As dusk fell over the raceway, it was up to the top fifteen to put their skills to the decisive test doing what they do best while under lights. One by one they threw down the gauntlet with some surviving to the finish while others exited in spectacular fashion.

Flame ups would inevitably count as the ultimate burnout seeing the rear ends do away with custom paint jobs while adding a new one giving new meaning to a “flame job”.

Steve Loader would eventually take out the cash with a spectacular flame up frying his rear end while leaving spot fires across the track for the volunteer fire fighters to put out.

We’ve lost count how many times Steve’s had to repaint his rear end but I reckon they’re due to name a shade of black paint after him.

This is a sport fast growing in popularity as the prize monies continue to rise so if you’re after a day of fast paced, engine revving, tire frying, smoke filled action, check out your local area for the next burnout comp and get on down. Hey, why not give it a go yourself; guaranteed to thrill you to the back teeth and you might even go home a little richer with a dirty big grin on your face!

Chevy Nationals, Calder Park, 2012

Calder Park was the place to be on Saturday for the first annual Chevy Nationals with action on the track and bling in the Thunderdome. What a way to kick start your weekend, cruise to Calder, park your wheels in the Thunderdome and watch an afternoon of Chevy donks in various GM manufactured products tearing up the strip and if the juices flowed hard enough through ya, you could go grab your ride, put it through scrutineering and get out there yourself!

While there was plenty of room for more bowtie muscle to be on show and go, it did allow those who participated to put plenty of runs under their belt with some guys and girls returning multiple times to hone in on their skills from the burnout to the fast ETs.

This event will become a major attraction as time goes on so grab your helmet, throw in your sticky rubber and get down to the track or polish her up, park her in the Dome and watch the em tear it up on the strip.

Lancefield swap meet and show n shine 2012

When it comes to country towns, you can take your chances as to the popularity of the event it is putting on and until you arrive you don’t know what you’re in for. Sometimes they disappoint you while others, such as the Lancefield swap meet and show n shine will blow you away with the size of the turn out. Lancefield, located in centralVictoriais one of those leafy towns you pass through admiring the picturesque setting as you do and could well mistake it for one that doesn’t take to automotive amusements such as swap meets and car shows but you would be sorely mistaken.

With over four hundred cars on display on the local football team, the Tigers’ oval and flanked by I don’t know how many swap meet sites, anyone visiting for the day could easily fill in their time picking through the wide assortment of automotive parts and great selection of bric-a-brac up for sale or peruse through the wide variety of automotive history, original and modified.

A live three piece band added to the atmosphere with their dulcet tones filling the air while the local club put on a decent barbeque feed for the hungry punters.

If you’re after parts for your project or a good excuse to drive through the country, you can’t go past this event as one of your regular calendar cruising dates!

Shannons American Motoring Show 2012

Have you ever been surrounded by over a thousand classic American cars without actually being in the Land of the free? Well today would have been your perfect opportunity to take in such opulence if you had attended the Shannons American Motoring Show held on the affluent grounds of Flemington Racecourse as the turnout today surpassed all expectations. From the time we arrived at 8:30, classic, muscle and modified American iron lined up at the various gates eager to park up and take in the other attractions on display, be it trade stand alley, breakfast with a coffee or to peruse the grounds taking in the motoring history that was quickly filling the grounds. Cars arrived in droves throughout the morning with overcast conditions keeping the temperature low until lunch time before the sun made its entrance to bath the automotive display in warmth. There were many new rides to take in while the “car of the show” display area held some highly detailed and much desired Yankee iron for the die-hards and casual punters alike to absorb. The rock and roll tunes of The Royals could be heard throughout the show adding a certain ambience that can only be achieve by such reverberations while the aroma of barbeques cooking wafted across the car park.

This is one ofVictoria’s premier events and continues to grow in size each year so if American iron is your cup of tea then put this one in your calendar for next year and we’ll see you there!
