I’m sure we’re all familiar with ShowcarsMelbourne and the standard of automotive shows they run especially when they run two very different style of events each year, one early in the year designed for high quality rides set up in their show stopping displays of lights and mirrors, encompassing the highest quality of workmanship and dedication to the sport and the second event taking it to the streets of trendy St. Kilda in a mind blowing display of colour and variety mixed with the artistic shops and eateries of Acland St! If you’re not, you’re missing out big time!
This year, Elvis and the loyal team of ShowcarsMelbourne stepped it up a notch by showcasing Victoria’s automotive finest at a new venue and not just any venue but at the prestigious hallowed grounds of Moonee Valley Racecourse located in Moonee Ponds
This was a first for the elite equine racing establishment as they allowed the more raucous side of horsepower into their main rooms, halls and grounds to display our preferred visions of hot thoroughbreds in all their glory and ShowcarsMelbourne certainly lived up to their expectations, impressing the powers that be to the point they’ve been invited back for next year!
With Shannons Insurance on board as the major sponsor among the many sponsors supporting the event, the aptly named Shannons Showdown 5 had all the makings of an elite car show, set to rival some of the biggest events in its class. Multiple Mequiars finalists were on display in all their livery along with some of Australia’s elite built classics and customs while front and centre was special guest and well known identity, Fitzy and his multi award winning FC Holden who travelled all the way down from Canberra, ACT to take part in this automotive spectacular!
Not content with one showroom of high quality rides, the vast awning leading to the showrooms was sprawled with more highly detailed and quality finished cars and bikes covering all the automotive styles from your rotisserie completed originals through to the highly modified customs, rods, street and race machines! This array of automotive livery only covers half the show!
With Saturday being the main set up day for the undercover showcars, Sunday saw the field of automotive dreams double in size as enthusiasts converged on the black top carpark and grassy parks in their own custom and classic rides quickly filling the main areas before 11am.
No automotive show would be complete without the usual array of trade stands and food stands and Shannons Showdown 5 was no different. Flanking the visually stimulating carkpark were the marquees displaying their wares of automotive parts and memorabilia as well as the food stands and undercover seating areas for the owners and visitors attending the event and a big credit must go to those working the hot plates and serveries as the temperature reached the thirty degree mark while those of us lucky enough to be able to peruse through the undercover areas enjoyed the comforts of air conditioning.
To add to the overall ambience of the show were the dulcet tones of two young bands as their own style of relaxed music resonated throughout the large undercover areas occasionally pausing for a contrasting high horsepower fire up demonstration from a pro stock drag car or a quick interview by Gian, the compare and one of a number of automotive identities.
Winding the day up was the highly anticipated trophy presentation as well as the raffle which was a huge success thanks to the stunning promotional models selling tickets throughout the day with all proceeds going to the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal.
I strongly believe ShowcarsMelbourne has successfully established itself as a major force in Australia’s automotive scene and that Showdown 6 will be an automotive spectacular not to be missed! Hats off to Elvis and the
ShowcarsMelbourne team on running such a large and impressive event seamlessly and I look forward to checking it out next year, bigger and better again!
