The Geelong Waterfront once again came alive with the sounds of racing engines and the sights of all things automotive, from beautifully restored classic cars and bikes along with late model sports cars. Complementing the two and four wheeled machines were a multitude of automotive based trade stands and displays.
While the beautiful girls and slick guys showcased the automotive fashion of the driving era with the coveted Fashions On The Field competition on the main stage, the hot competition was found on the Ritchie Boulevard quarter mile strip! Saturday’s racing was for the later model rides, covering all production sports cars, touring cars through to tarmac rally and all-wheel drive racing machines! These guys heated up the track while laying down a top surface of rubber allowing the times to drop as the weekend went on!
Sunday’s quarter mile entertainment brought out the classics and vintage machines of both two and four wheels along with the contemporary machines of the era! These machines bring back memories of a time when the mechanicals controlled the speed rather than the electronics giving the doting public the sights, sounds and smells of old school racing machinery in action!
Television actor and host of Australian Top Gear, Shane Jacobson spent the weekend rubbing shoulders with the drivers and enthusiastic public across the weekend, always happy to pose for a photo op or sign a program. Legendary tarmac racing rally driver, Rex Broadbent mixed it up on the track showing us old drivers never lose their pace!
Australia’s number one stunt rider, Matt Mingay and his Hot Wheels stunt bike showed us that the laws of physics don’t always apply as he spent more time on one wheel than two while wowing the crowds with his antics. Not to steal the show but couldn’t help but wow the crowd was Funderbolt, an old school 60s era Ford gasser in all its patina paint and livery as he smoked the strip on the rears with the nose pointing skyward!
This event grows in statue each year, seeing a bigger turnout of race cars, show cars and visitors alike as they converge on Geelong to take in this motoring festival! A big well done to the event organisers for putting on a spectacular yet safety conscious event showcasing all that we embrace about our racing heritage! I look forward to seeing what they come up with next year!
Keep on cruisin’
Cheers,
Greg
