Saturday, March 15th saw the 6th running of The Ultimate Burnout Challenge at Avalon Raceway new Geelong. Competitors turned up in their droves ready to smash tires out on the purpose built pad.
A great turnout of the street class proved that this sport is still growing as the young guns put their mettle to the pedal as they gave their burnout beasts all they had seeing most finish with pride while others blew under pressure.
The weather tried to get in on the action threatening put an early finish to the comp but tenacity from the competitors and organisers refused to lay down to her fury and instead inflicted their own fury on sacrificial tires showing they can create their own storms!
Those who stuck it out were treated to a top ten shootout after dark! While the condition of the pad and surrounding clay (it is a sprint car track after all) wasn’t looking too promising for the competitors, with a grader, some fast cleaning of wheels and the determination of the drivers wanting to still put on a show, they headed out onto the pad with some impressive results! They smashed those black hoops all over the joint, raising smoke and hell as if nothing was an issue! The judges were to take the conditions into consideration but I reckon the final runs were as good as the day runs!
The event finished with the monies and trophies dished out to those showed up best while others headed off into the night with fresh plans and repairs on their mind but still satisfied they came and gave it their best shot.
A big pat on the back must go to the organisers, Steve and Kylie Loader and Clint and Robyn Ogilvie and their dressed to impress crew who meticulously kept the track clean of debris and busted rides! Determined to see the event go on, they did everything in their power to ensure they went home without the prize money and content in the knowledge there was a bunch of satisfied tire smashers heading out into the night looking forward to the next UBC!
Keep on cruising!
Cheers,
Greg
